You’ve probably heard of herbs like Peppermint, Chamomile and Lavender, but what about some of the lesser-known plants and herbs nature has to offer? At Naturulz, we love discovering ingredients that may not be household names but have wonderful properties and benefits. Every ingredient we use in our products is chosen for a reason, and sometimes it’s the ones you’ve never heard of that have the most interesting stories to tell! So, we’d like to begin our first installment in a 5 part series and introduce you to a few of our favorites, share what makes them special and explain why we love using them in our products.
These herbs each bring something different to a blend. Some contribute flavor, some bring naturally occurring plant compounds, and some have a long history in traditional herbal use. Together, they can make a tea feel balanced instead of harsh, overly sweet, or one-note.
Still, natural does not mean identical for every person. Healing is not one-size-fits-all, and neither is tea. Your health history, medications, sensitivities, and daily routine all matter.
Rosehips are the small, round fruits that form after a rose blooms. They are often red or orange, and they bring a lightly tart, fruity flavor that wakes up an herbal blend without needing artificial flavoring.
People have used rosehips in teas, syrups, and preserves for generations. They contain naturally occurring vitamin C along with plant pigments and other antioxidant compounds. In a tea blend, rosehips are often there for both character and balance: they add a cheerful tang that can keep earthier herbs from tasting too heavy.
That tartness matters. A good herbal tea should be something you want to drink regularly, not something you force down because it is supposedly good for you. Rosehips help make a cup feel fresh and approachable, especially in blends meant for everyday wellness support.
Rosehips support gut health with prebiotic pectin, help soothe the digestive tract and promote healthy, regular bowel movements as well as helping combat oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially supporting emotional well-being and a healthy gut-brain connection, think Sereni-Tea.
Due to being rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, Rosehips indirectly support better rest by reducing chronic pain, lowering inflammation, and calming stress, think Sleepy-Tea.
Primarily due to their high concentration of vitamin C and antioxidants, Rosehips also support immune health, think Immuni-Tea.
Licorice Root is one of those ingredients people notice right away. Its naturally sweet, smooth flavor helps balance bitter or earthy notes in herbal teas without adding sugar. It’s one of the reasons we love including it in our Immuni-Tea blend!
But Licorice Root has a bigger story than flavor. It has a long history in traditional herbal preparations, particularly for digestive comfort and seasonal throat support. It contains naturally occurring compounds, including glycyrrhizin and triterpenoids, that have been studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties.
That’s why we love Licorice Root in two very different ways: in Immuni-Tea, as part of a comforting herbal tea blend, and in CongestAid, our topical product designed for seasonal chest and sinus comfort.
Like many powerful herbs, Licorice Root should be used thoughtfully. It’s not a cure-all, but its versatility and long history of traditional use make it an ingredient we appreciate!
Alfalfa leaf is a nutrient-dense, leafy plant that has long been used as food for animals and as an herbal ingredient for people. In tea, it has a mild green taste, somewhere between fresh hay and leafy greens. It is not the flashy ingredient in the cup, but it can bring an earthy, grounded quality to a blend.
Alfalfa is valued for its naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds. In herbal traditions, it has often been included in formulas meant to complement general nourishment and everyday vitality. Think of it less as a magic leaf and more as one part of a broader plant-based routine.
Its quieter flavor is useful, too. Strong herbs can take over a tea quickly. Alfalfa leaf helps create a more settled base so brighter rosehips and sweeter licorice root have room to do their thing.
Nature offers an extraordinary variety of plants and herbs, many of which are unfamiliar to most of us.
